Pi and the Power it Holds for All of Us……..into Infinity…..

pi-day004Today it is about bringing out the nerdy side of me, once again.  And yes, it is past Pi Day for this year (which was on March 14th) and not pie day, which seems to most days for most people.  Let’s not confuse Pi with pie.  Though, I have seen an apple Pi (where the Pi symbol was carved into an apple).  You probably would rather have some apple pie instead, right?  Well, with today’s obesity rate, I would suggest not eating apple pie and instead eat that apple Pi as you use your brain to find out the circumference of different circles using Pi.

Pi has been around for quite a long time.  It was the Greek mathematician Archimedes that first formulated  an algorithm to which we use this day……3.14159…. There has been research that showed that as far back as the ancient Egyptians may have known about this calculation.  In fact, the Great Pyramid of Giza has a ratio of 2Π.  It was Leonhard Euler that first started using the Pi symbol Π.  Today, we only use Π out to no more than 40 digits for mathematical accuracy.  Any more is simply about memory competition.  Scientists and mathematicians have been able to do computational analysis of Π out to over 10 trillion digits.  Remember, Π goes out to infinity in reality.  And the prime number of Π is only 38 digits long.

You may be asking “Why the heck did Bob do a post on Π?”  The big question and my answer is that Π is important in our everyday lives.  When we listen to sounds, from low to high, well that is 2Π.  Other types of waves are also 2Π.  Just look at frequency plots that sound engineers deal with.  I remember my father using an oscillator when I was young.

Here’s another way Π is used, the next time you fly on a plane, the arc it flies from point A to point B is a based on Π.  Without it, we’d never know how it would take and the distance involved.  If you’re watching a football game when the quarterback throws the football, he has to do it on an arc for longer distances.  His brain is automatically calculating Π. It’s built into us and don’t know it.  Now I said that your brain is full of Pi and not pie.  Again, don’t freaking mistake the two.

There are a multitude of areas that pertain to this most beautiful of mathematical digits.  I guess it’s also the only one that has been turned into art.  Within the radius of a circle known as Π, we have has no repeating patterns.  It’s irrational as many of us are.  And yet, through that irrationality and imperfection comes perfection.

Hence, the real reason I brought forth Π and mentioned that each of us has Π built into us is that we are perfect in our imperfections.  Without you in this world would be like taking out one of the digits of Π.  And what would happen?  Well, Π could not exist and neither could this world without you.  Each of you are an important component of what makes this world work.  Embrace your uniqueness and even you irrationality sometimes.  You are perfect!

Cheers,
